IndyCar Announces 2013 Stop In Houston

Last updated on Thursday, March 29, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The IZOD IndyCar Series will race through Reliant Park in Houston in 2013.

IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard announced Wednesday that the event will take place October 4th through the 6th next season.

The event will be known as the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston. The multi-year title sponsorship agreement between Shell and Pennzoil and Mi-Jack promotions made a return of the race to Houston possible.

The Champ Car World Series raced at Reliant Park in 2006 and 2007 with Sebastien Bourdais winning both events. The IndyCar Series will use the old Champ Car track, which consists of ten turns and is 1.7n miles in length.

Open Test To Take Place At IMS

IndyCar also announced that there will be an open test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on April 4th. Each team will be allowed to send one car to participate.

IndyCar vice president of technology Will Phillips says this was originally scheduled to be a manufacturers' test but that Dallara worked hard to make sure that parts will be available for all teams to practice.

Rookie drivers will not be a part of next week's test. The Rookie Orientation Program is scheduled for May tenth at the Speedway.
