(ST. PETERSBURG, FL) The IZOD IndyCar Series season gets underway this weekend as they race through the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida.
Two practice sessions are scheduled for Friday with one more Saturday morning before qualifications on Saturday afternoon over the 14-turn, one-point-eight-mile street circuit.
The race will be held on Sunday afternoon.
This weekend marks the debut of new chassis and engines for the IndyCar Series. The new Dallara DW-twelve chassis is expected to be a better performer on road and street courses than its predecessor. The old chassis had been in service since 2003.
Chevrolet and Lotus join Honda as engine suppliers. Honda had been the lone engine supplier in the series since 2006.
Dario Franchitti is the defending race and series champion. Franchitti is going for his fourth-straight IndyCar Series Championship and his fifth title in six years.
