(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Butler could be moving to the Atlantic 10 conference in all sports except football as early as the fall of 2013, according to an ESPN report.
The A-10 is looking for a replacement for Temple, which will join the Big East for the 2013-14 athletic season. The bulldogs currently compete in the Indianapolis-based Horizon League in all sports but football. Butler's football team would remain in the Pioneer League.
A move to the A-10 by Butler would increase the conference's Midwest presence. Xavier, Dayton and Saint Louis are current Atlantic 10 members.
Butler's basketball program would be a significant addition for the A-10. The Bulldogs reached the championship game of the NCAA tournament in 2010 and 2011, losing to Duke and Connecticut, respectively, in the title contests. The Bulldogs failed to make the NCAA tournament this season and host the Delaware Blue Hens tomorrow night in the opening round of the college basketball invitational.
Butler is a charter member of the Horizon League, joining in 1979 when it was known as the Midwestern City Conference. Xavier, Dayton and Saint Louis are also former MCC members.
