(DENVER, CO) - Brittney Griner scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Baylor Bears to an 80-61 victory over Notre Dame in the championship game of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament in Denver.
The top-ranked Bears took a 34-28 lead to the locker room at intermission and the Fighting Irish would get to within three at 42-39 before Baylor took control with an 8-2 run.
The Bears then blew the game open later in the half with a 21-2 outburst to take a 25-point lead with less than five minutes remaining.
Griner was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.
Odyssey Sims added 19 points with Destiny Williams finishing with twelve as the Bears win their second title in women's basketball and finish the season with a perfect 40-and-0 record.
Skylar Diggins scored 20 points to lead the Irish with Kayla McBride adding eleven as the Irish wind up the season at 35-and-4.
It was a particularly rough night for Notre Dame senior guard Natalie Novosel, who missed all eleven of her shots from the field and finished with just five points. Novosel was second to Diggins in scoring this season for the Irish, averaging 15 points per contest.
Notre Dame has lost in the title game in back-to-back seasons. They fell to Texas A&M last year in Indianapolis.
