(INDIANAPOLIS) - IndyCar has placed driver Graham Rahal on probation for six races for blocking and initiating avoidable contact during last Sunday’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
Rahal made contact with the car driven by Marco Andretti on Lap 22. The contact launched Andretti's car into the air before it made contact with the tire barrier.
IZOD IndyCar Series race director Beaux Barfield handed down the ruling after reviewing tape of the incident.
Barfield tells The Indianapolis Star that Rahal moved into Andretti's path while Andretti was attempting to make a pass. No penalty was issued during the race because the incident took out both Rahal and Andretti.
Rahal's probation will last through the June 23rd race at Iowa Speedway.
