(MARTINSVILLE, VA) - South Bend’s Ryan Newman took advantage of some misfortune for Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Martinsville Speedway.
Newman took the lead after Gordon and Johnson were involved in an accident with Clint Bowyer on a restart during the first attempt at a green-white-checkered finish.
Newman, who came back from a speeding penalty on pit road early in the race, held off AJ Allmendinger on the second restart to get his first win since last July. Allmendinger finished second with Dale Earnhardt Junior, Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Junior rounding out the top five.
The Sprint Cup Series has next weekend off. They race again on April 14th at Texas Motor Speedway.
