(Indianapolis, IN) - IndyCar has announced that the 2012 IZOD IndyCar schedule will remain at 15 races and that the season finale at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, has been extended to 500 miles.
IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard made the announcements via a news release on Monday.
IndyCar had been exploring a potential replacement race after the event scheduled for August 19th in China was cancelled. Bernard reportedly had been in contact with several tracks regarding scheduling a race to replace China on the schedule.
Among the tracks reportedly approached were Road America at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca and Texas Motor Speedway.
IndyCar says in the release that it has the support of series entitlement sponsor IZOD to keep the schedule at 15 races. IZOD's contract specifies that the series run a minimum of 16 events.
Bernard says there is not enough time to add and properly promote another event. Bernard also had to be careful with the promoters at Auto Club Speedway who have been promoting the September 15th race in Fontana as the season finale. One option would have been to run another race after Fontana.
