(Chicago, IL) - Pittsburgh was unable to take advantage of the Reds’ loss as the Pirates were blasted by the Chicago Cubs 14-4 at Wrigley Field.
Darwin Barney fell a double short of hitting for the cycle, collecting a three-run home run and driving in four.
Anthony Rizzo also hit a three-run shot for the Cubs with Starlin Castro adding a two-run homer and driving in three.
Reed Johnson and Geovany Soto started the game for Chicago but were removed for pinch hitters after being traded during the game.
Johnson and pitcher Paul Maholm reportedly are headed to the Atlanta Braves while Soto reportedly was sent to the Texas Rangers on the eve of the trade deadline.
With the loss, the Pirates remain three games behind first-place Cincinnati in the NL Central.
