(Indianapolis, IN) - Tamika Catchings hit two free throws with 8.4 seconds remaining to give the Indiana Fever an 84-82 victory over the New York Liberty at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
The Fever controlled most of the game, overcoming an early 7-3 deficit to lead by as many as twelve points midway through the third quarter. New York cut the lead to seven at the end of the period and grabbed a four-point lead on Cappie Pondexter's three-pointer with 3:32 remaining. Back-to-back threes from Catchings allowed Indiana to regain the lead but another three from Pondexter with 35 seconds left tied the game at 82.
After Indiana's Briann January missed a 15-footer with ten seconds left, Catchings grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled by the Liberty's Leilani Mitchell. Catchings sank both free throws and New York's Essence Carson missed a short jumper at the other end to give the Fever the win.
Catchings finished with a team-high 23 points with Katie Douglas adding 20. Those performances helped offset a 33-point effort from Pondexter as the Liberty drop to 6-and-11. The Fever improve to 10-and-6.
They close out the first half of the season tomorrow night when they host the Los Angeles Sparks. Following tomorrow night's game, the WNBA will take a one-month break for the Olympics.
