(Charlotte, NC) - Sam Hornish Junior will remain behind the wheel of Penske Racing’s number-22 Sprint Cup Series car for this Sunday’s race at New Hampshire.
The 2006 Indianapolis 500 winner, who drives a Nationwide Series car for Penske, jumped behind the wheel of the number-22 car for last Saturday night's Sprint Cup race at Daytona after the car's regular driver, AJ Allmendinger, was temporarily suspended for failing a drug test.
Allmendiger has until this afternoon to appeal the results of the test, but Penske Racing president Tim Cindric tweeted on Monday that the decision to keep Hornish in the seat this weekend was made to ensure that the team is properly prepared for the more demanding New Hampshire Motor Speedway track. If Allmendinger appeals, NASCAR will test his "B" sample and determine his status following that test.
News of Allmendinger's suspension came on Saturday afternoon, hours before the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona.
Hornish suffered a blown tire on Lap 82 that severely damaged the car and finished in 30th place.
Following Sunday's race at Loudon, the Sprint Cup Series will have a week off before racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 29th.
