(South Bend, IN) - Notre Dame has suspended running back Cierre Wood and defensive end Justin Utupo for the first two games of the season.
Head coach Brian Kelly issued a statement saying that the suspensions are for violations of team rules.
Wood, a senior, ran for 1,102 yards and nine touchdowns last season while Utupo has played primarily on special teams.
Both will be out for Saturday's opener against Navy in Dublin, Ireland and for the September 8th game against Purdue.
Theo Riddick will likely replace Wood in the starting lineup against the Midshipmen and the Boilermakers.
Kelly has already suspended starting quarterback Tommy Rees and linebacker Carlo Calabrese for the Navy game after both were involved in a confrontation with police following an off-campus party last May.
Sophomore Everett Golson will start for Rees this Saturday.
The Fighting Irish also lost starting cornerback Lo Wood for the season last week with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
