(Washington, DC) Ross Detwiler outdueled Jeff Samardzija as the Washington Nationals edged the Chicago Cubs 2-1.
Adam LaRoche gave the Nats a 1-0 lead in the second when he hammered a Samardzija pitch over the right field wall.
It would be the only run surrendered by either starter.
Ryan Zimmerman would drive in the second Washington run with a double in the eighth while Wellington Castillo would get the lone Chicago RBI with a single off Nationals closer Tyler Cippard in the ninth.
Detwiler went seven shutout innings, giving up four hits in improving to 9-6.
Samardzija allowed a run on seven hits in his seven innings, striking out eight in falling to 8-13.
