(San Francisco, CA) - Mike Matheny’s bullpen strung together five scoreless innings to help the St. Louis Cardinals hold on for a 6-to-4 win over the San Francisco Giants in game one of the NLCS.
Six relievers were used when Lance Lynn was pulled from the game following a comeback by the Giants in the fourth inning.
David Freese gave St. Louis an early 2-0 lead in the second inning with his first homerun of the postseason .
The Cardinals chased out Madison Bumgarner with a four run, fourth inning that was capped by a two run shot from Carlos Beltran.
Bumgarner left the game after allowing all six Cardinal runs in his second poor showing of the 2012 postseason at AT& T Park.
The Giants responded in their half of the fourth by tagging Lynn with four runs, including a two run triple by Gregor Blanco.
The Cardinals pen allowed one hit the rest of the game and Jason Motte pitched the ninth for his second postseason save.
The Cardinals will pitch Chris Carpenter against the Giants Brian Vogelsong in game two at AT& T Park tonight. First pitch is at 8:00.
