(Lahaina, HI) - The Butler Bulldogs survived a late run by the North Carolina Tar Heels to upset the ninth ranked team in the nation, 82-to-71 in the Maui Invitational Semi Finals.
Butler had a 27 point lead with seven minutes left in the game, but a late surge by North Carolina cut the lead to six with less than two minutes to play. Butler made five free throws down the stretch to hang-on and advance to the tournament finals.
Kellen Dunham and Rotnei Clark led all scorers with 17 points each, and Khyle Marshall added ten points and 11 rebounds for the 3-and-1 Bulldogs.
The Maui Invitational Championship game will feature Butler taking on 4-and-0 Illinois, who beat the Chaminade Silverswords 84-to-61 to advance. Tipoff is at 10:00.
