(Indianapolis, IN) - Butler University President James Danko issued a statement yesterday that neither denied or affirmed rumors that the small Indianapolis university is considering a departure from the Atlantic-10 in favor of a new conference made-up of former Big-East schools.
Danko acknowledged that Butler was being considered as a potential member in a new "Catholic 7" league, but was non-committal on whether the university was actively pursuing membership or if serious talks have been established between the two entities.
It was reported that Villanova, Georgetown, St. John's, DePaul, Marquette, Providence and Seton Hall had officially left the Big-East Saturday to form their own conference and that Butler was one of the schools being considered for membership.
Since then, neither side has dissuaded rumors that the Bulldogs could make another conference jump after departing the Horizon League for the A-10 last year.
