(West Lafayette, IN) - The Purdue Boilermakers slowed down the number-14 Illinois Fighting Illini enough to score a 68-61 upset win in their conference opener at Mackey Arena.
DJ Byrd made a trio of 3-pointers during a 15 to 3 run in the second half that helped the Boilermakers to their first winning record of the season.
Byrd finished with 15 points and Junior Terone Johnson led all scorers with a career high 25 points.
Brandon Paul led Illinois with 15 points and made two 3-pointers late in the game to cut the Boilermaker lead to three.
The Fighting Illini are 13-2 and host the Ohio State Buckeyes Saturday.
Purdue are 7-and-6 and travel to the number-18 Michigan State Spartans, also Saturday.
