(Champaign, IL) - The Illinois Fighting Illini scored with time expiring to upset the top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers, 74-72 at Assembly Hall in Champaign, Illinois.
Tyler Griffey slid behind the Hoosier front line to receive an uncontested inbound pass with .9 seconds left on the game clock. He made an easy layup just before the buzzer to give Illinois their first win over a number-one ranked team since 2004.
The Hoosiers led by double-digits most of the game until D-J Richardson rallied the Fighting Illini with three minutes to play in the second half. Richardson followed back-to-back 3-pointers with a mid-range jumper that tied the game at 70 with over a minute left in to play.
Seconds later, Victor Oladipo blocked a shot out of bounds in setting up the game winning field goal for Illinois.
Richardson finished with 23 points to lead all scorers and Brandon Paul added 21 points for the Fighting Illini.
Cody Zeller had 14 points and nine rebounds and Victor Oladipo, the reigning co-Big Ten Player of the Week, had nine points and five assists for the Hoosiers.
Illinois is 16-8 overall, 3-7 in the Big Ten Conference, and travel to the number-18 Minnesota Golden Gophers Sunday afternoon.
The Hoosiers fall into a three-way tie for first place in the conference with the number-three Michigan Wolverines and number-eight Michigan State Spartans.
Indiana are 20-3 overall, 8-2 in the Big Ten, and travel to number-ten Ohio State Sunday.
