(INDIANAPOLIS) - The estate of late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and others have sued the NCAA over the unprecedented sanctions against the university in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
The NCAA imposed a four-year bowl ban, many scholarship cuts and a $60-million fine. The suit alleges the NCAA rushed to judgement and used the Louis Free report to issue the sanctions.
Former Indiana college coach and administrator Bob Lovell says there is merit to the lawsuit because the NCAA normally goes through an exhaustive investigative process before issuing sanctions. The sanctions against Penn St. came after a matter of months.
The Paterno family is joined in the suit by several university trustees and former players. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has also filed a federal antitrust suit against the NCAA. This comes as the NCAA is facing criticism for the investigation of the University of Miami.
The NCAA has not commented on the Paterno family lawsuit.
