(Indianapolis, IN) - Indianapolis local Ed Carpenter will lead the field-of-33 across the yard of bricks when the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500 begins this Sunday.
Carpenter won the pole with a late qualifying run during the "fast nine shootout" Saturday evening by turning a four-lap average speed of 228.762 miles per hour.
Rookie Carlos Munoz and Marco Andretti fill out the first row.
Kathrine Legge will begin in 33rd after turning her first practice laps Sunday morning and making a successful qualifying run later in the day.
Legge didn't have a ride for the 500 until a deal was announced Saturday with Sam Schmidt Motorsports.
The Indianapolis 500 is this Sunday, May 26th.
