(Philadelphia, PA) - An autopsy revealed that former NASCAR and open wheel driver Jason Leffler died from a blunt force neck injury sustained in a crash while racing Wednesday night.
A medical examiner in eastern Pennsylvania ruled that Leffler suffered the fatal injury when the sprint car he was driving struck the wall at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey.
He was extricated from the vehicle and pronounced dead at a Pennsylvania hospital shortly after 9:00 Wednesday night.
Columbus, Indiana native and former NASCAR champion Tony Stewart released a statement through his Stewart-Haas racing team, saying Leffler "was a great racer and an even better friend."
South Bend's Ryan Newman called Leffler a clean competitor and noted a mutual respect between the two drivers.
