(undated) - In the National League Tuesday, Jeff Samardzija picked up his first career win in the month of June and the Chicago Cubs held on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 at Busch Stadium.
Samardzija pitched into the ninth inning and limited the first place Cardinals to two-runs while striking out nine.
The former Notre Dame two-sports star entered last night's game winless in eight June starts but outdueled Cardinals' ten-game winner Adam Wainwright to end his winless streak and improve to 4-7 on the year.
Wainwright carries a 10-4 record after giving up four-runs in seven-innings pitched.
The Cubs are 29-40 and have split the four meetings against the Cardinals this season.
St. Louis is 45-26 and will host Chicago tonight at 8:15.
