(Washington D-C) Indianapolis Colts safety Joe Lefeged is being held without bond in a Washington DC jail after his arrest early Saturday morning on a weapons charge.
Lefeged was the front seat passenger in a white convertible that was stopped just after midnight for speeding in eastern Washington DC.
Police say the driver was repeatedly ordered to put the car in park, but instead drove off and nearly struck several officers that had surrounded the car.
The vehicle was later recovered, and Lefeged was apprehended when he, the driver, and another passenger tried to run away in different directions.
Police documents show that officers located a forty-caliber semi-automatic handgun under the front passenger seat and a plastic bottle of vodka and orange juice in the center council.
Authorities say a purchase receipt revealed that Lefeged had bought the gun earlier in the year for nine-hundred dollars.
He possessed the necessary purchase paperwork from the Maryland State Police but was not authorized to carry the gun in the DC area, which has strict gun and ammunition laws.
The Colts said in a written statement that the franchise had no further comment on the matter until more information was gathered.
