(Chicago, IL) - The Pittsburgh Pirates clinched at least a National League Wild Card berth by edging the Chicago Cubs 2-1 Monday, and getting help by a Washington Nationals loss.
It will be the Pirates first playoff appearance in 21 years.
The clincher turned dramatic for the Pirates, Starling Marte hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth inning, and the visitors threw out a runner at the plate for the final out.
Reliever Mark Melancon got the win for Pittsburgh, helped by closer Jason Grilli's 32nd save.
Cubs closer Kevin Gregg took the loss.
