(INDIANAPOLIS) - Dario Franchitti will be driving the pace car for the 98th running of the Indy 500, but what he will be driving is no ordinary pace car.
The Chevy Camaro Z/28 will lead the cars around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 25th. It's the eighth time a Camaro has served as a pace car, and the 25th time for a Chevrolet vehicle.
Chevy spokesman Monte Doran says the goal was to return the Z/28 to the track, and adds "the new 2014 Camaro Z/28 is produced solely for going around a race track as fast as possible."
Doran says the car is about 300 lbs. lighter than a normal Camaro. The car doesn't even have air conditioning or a stereo to make it as light as possible.
Doran says despite all the racing components, the car is street-legal.
