(Fontana, CA) - Kyle Busch picked up his first NASCAR Sprint Cup win of the season, holding off rookie Kyle Larson to win Sunday’s race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.
Jimmie Johnson held a comfortable lead when he blew a tire with seven laps remaining. Jeff Gordon took over the lead, but Clint Bowyer's spin with two laps remaining necessitated a green-white-checkered finish.
Several of the lead drivers, including Gordon, pitted for fresh tires on a day marked by several drivers having problems with flat tires.
Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart battled for the lead on the restart with Kyle Busch and Larson going underneath and passing those two coming off Turn Two on the final lap.
Kurt Busch finished third with Matt Kenseth fourth and Stewart finishing fifth.
Stewart was the top finisher among the Indiana drivers with Gordon coming in 13th and Ryan Newman finishing in 20th position.
Carl Edwards finished tenth, but that was enough to put him one point ahead of Dale Earnhardt Junior for the Sprint Cup points lead with Gordon just two points back.
The Sprint Cup series heads back east this Sunday for a short-track race at Martinsville Speedway.
