(Noblesville, IN) - Former Indiana State University men’s basketball coach Royce Waltman died Monday night following a long battle with cancer. He was 72.
Following a successful career as a high school coach in Pennsylvania, Waltman joined Bob Knight's staff at Indiana in 1982. He was an assistant coach on the Hoosiers' 1987 championship team and also served as an assistant to Knight on the 1984 United States Olympic basketball team.
He left IU following the 1987 championship to take over as head coach at DePauw. He led the Tigers to three NCAA Division-3 Tournament berths in his five seasons.
Waltman moved on to the University of Indianapolis, leading the Greyhounds to a pair of Division-2 tournament berths before being named head coach at Indiana State in 1998.
He led the Sycamores to NCAA Tournament berths in 2000 and 2001. He was fired at Indiana State in 2007 and spent one final season as head coach at Indianapolis.
Waltman spent his final years as an analyst for the Indiana Hoosiers radio network.
