(UNDATED) - The following is a wrapup of regional baseball matchups from Wednesday.
(Cleveland, OH) - The Indians split a double header with the Podres, winning the first game 2-0 behind the steady arm of Zach Mcallister, who got all the run support he needed from Jason Kipinis when he hit a 2 run homer in the 6th.
Mcallister pitched 7 and two thirds innings giving of shutout ball, giving up just 5 hits and striking out 7.
Despite a solid outing, from Cleveland's prospect pitcher Trevor Bauer, which included escaping a disaster in the 6th inning, by only allowing 1 run, and striking out 8 batters on the day.
It was Robbie Erlins arm that proved to be the strongest, continually frustrating the Cleveland batters, as he tossed 6 innings allowing just 1 run and as he struck out 6, to give the Padres a 2-1 victory.
(St. Louis, MO) - The Reds blanked the Cardinals 4-0 behind Mike Leakes strong outing, he pitched 8 frames giving up just 4 hits.
Billy Hamilton was the go to guy on offense, reaching base 4 times, and scoring twice, he also stole 2 bases, and scored on a shallow popup in right center field. The speedster truly got rolling yesterday, finally displaying the qualities that manager Bryan Price anticipated starting him as the leadoff batter.
The Reds are now 3 and 6 on the young season, but showed several signs of improvement as they knocked off their division rivals.
(Denver, CO) - The White Sox have dropped to 4-5 on the season since losing to the Rockies yesterday 10-4.
It was a back and forth battle through the first seven innings, with the Rockies opening up the scoring in the first, the White sox getting 2 in the second, followed by a Rockies answer with 1 in the 2nd and 3rd, then the Sox getting 2 back in the 5th and the Rockies tying it up in the 6th. But in the 8th the Rockies bats caught fire, hitting 6 singles and 1 double for a monster 6 run inning, officially putting the game out of reach.
Rex Brothers earned the win in relief, while Scott Downs was pinned with the loss.
(Chicago, IL) - The Cubs beat the Pirates 7-5. in a game that featured 7 home runs.
Five for the Pirates including 2 a piece from Pedro Alverez, and Russel Martin. While Mike Olt, and Junior Lake paired up to hit back to back homeruns in the 5th inning for the Cubs.
On the other side, it was Jason Hammels getting his first ever win at Wrigley field, and in his first start there as a Cub. He pitched 7 innings of tough ball, giving up just 3 hits, all solo home runs and 3 earned runs, while striking six.
The Cubs used 3 runs in both the 5th and 6th innings to pull away from the Pirates, and sustained a 2 run rally late in the 9th, to hold on for the win.
