(Indianapolis, IN) - With the NBA Draft set to take place tonight the Pacers may have more to consider with the #11 pick as reports say David West has decided to opt out of his contract with the Pacers and become a free agent.
The 35-year old big man would have made $12.6 million dollars this upcoming season if he stayed with Indiana but sources say West "didn't want to stay for the money".
Larry Bird issued a statement on the situation saying "I haven't been in touch with David or his agent. So, until then he's a member of our team."
Meanwhile, Pacers General Manager Kevin Pritchard spoke in a pre-draft press conference and said being a smaller market team makes the draft more critical to improving the team than free agency.
"I think you try to get the best player you can because in a small market its your only chance to get special. We aren't a top draw for free agents. We aren't the New York's or the L.A.'s so to get a special player we have to get them in the draft."
