(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Simon Family wants to do everything it can to keep the Indiana Pacers competitive.
Pacers Sports & Entertainment Senior Vice President Bill Benner says their planned $50 million, 130,000-square-foot training facility - approved by the Capital Improvement Board Monday - is continued proof of their commitment to Indianapolis. Benner says they need the new facility to remain competitive in the National Basketball Association.
It'll be built just south of the Virginia Avenue Garage. The CIB will continue to own the land which it'll lease to PSE for 40 years with an additional 10-year option.
Benner says 20 NBA teams have either built or planned to build stand alone training facilities since Bankers Life Fieldhouse opened in 1999. Benner says the competition for free agents remains keen and many players come from college programs that themselves have state-of-the-art facilities. The new training facility will have five floors complete with offices, medical and training space.
Benner says the Indiana Fever will use current training facility space in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. He says they hope to get rolling on the project within the couple of years.
