(INDIANAPOLIS) - Alexander Rossi took the checkered flag at the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.
Running on fumes on the final lap, Rossi was still able to cross the finish line 4.4975 seconds ahead of teammate Carlos Munoz. It was Rossi's first Verizon IndyCar Series victory and he became the first rookie to win the Indianapolis 500 since Helio Castroneves in 2001.
"I don't even know where to begin. I wasn't even thinking about the Indy 500 in February and here we are and I won it," Rossi said.
Asked how the celebratory milk tasted after the victory, Rossi said, "It tasted better than anything I've ever had, I'll definitely be a lifelong fan of milk."
After Rossi and Munoz were Josef Newgarden, Tony Kanaan and Charlie Kimball. Polesitter James Hinchcliffe finished in seventh.
Car owner Bryan Herta's team last won with the late Dan Wheldon at the wheel in 2011--the 100th anniversary year of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. To describe Rossi's victory in the 100th running Herta said, "I just don't have the words.
