(RIO DE JANEIRO) - IU’s own Lilly King captured the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke Monday night, setting an Olympic record of 1 minute and 4.93 seconds.
King out-dueled Russian rival Yulia Efimova, who served a doping ban and was reinstated right before the Games began.
King and Efimova have been going at each other since Sunday's semifinal when Efimova mockingly waved her finger 'No. 1' like King did earlier that day. King responded, "You're shaking your finger 'No. 1' and you've been caught for drug cheating."
The Evansville native fired some more shots toward Efimova after Monday's race saying, "It's incredible. You know, just winning a gold medal, but knowing I did it clean. All my hard work paid off, practice and the weights. Everything, basically."
American Katie Meili, took bronze.
