(LAFAYETTE) - Mackey Arena exploded Tuesday evening with with a two high caliber teams tipping off one of the biggest non-conference games of this young NCAA basketball season.
Purdue hosted the 2015 defending NCAA Basketball Champion Villanova Wildcats with a March Madness-like atmosphere surrounding the court.
The game would be very tight until the final whistle. A calm Nova team sank it's free throws in the last minute and closed this one out 79-76.
Villanova Senior guard Josh Hart was in control the entire game and ended up with 24 points. Purdue could not find an answer on the defensive side of the ball for the veteran shooter.
On the other hand, the boilermaker big men made it extremely difficult for Villanova to pull away. Canter Issac Hass and Forward Caleb Swanigan ended up with a combined 42 points.
The boilermakers don't lose at home often but a loss to a team at this level means Purdue seems like they will be a legitimate contender down the road.
