(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Colts made a stunning trade on Wednesday as they sent tight end Dwayne Allen and a 2017 sixth-round pick to the arch-rival New England Patriots in exchange for a 2017 fourth-round pick.
Indianapolis signed Allen to a four-year, $29.4 million extension just last off-season but with the news just a day earlier that they signed Jack Doyle to a three-year, $19 million extension Allen became expendable.
The move doesn't seem to be a financial decision, as it only saves the just under $3 million but shows that the team, under new General Manager Chris Ballard, is serious about reshaping the roster.
Allen posted a heartfelt message on social media to confirm the news. "I want to give my sincerest thanks to the Irsay family for taking a chance on a kid from Fayetteville, N.C. It's been an honor wearing the horseshoe and representing the Colts on and off the field. My teammates will always be my brothers, and the friends that I've made are for life. I'm both humbled and excited for the challenge ahead of earning the right to be called a New England Patriot. May God continue to bless the city of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Colts."
