(BEDFORD) - Bedford North Lawrence football will now compete in the Class 5A Sectional 15, a five-team sectional composed of Hoosier Hills Conference teams.
The Times Mail reports that this is the third time in the last six years the team has been moved by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.
BNL will join Floyd Central, New Albany, Seymour and Columbus East in the new alignment for at least the next two years.
The shift is based on changing enrollments, the new playoff system (with six classes), and the "success factor" rule that bumps teams into different classes.
In the lower classes, Mitchell remained in 2A but was shifted to Sectional 39, an eight-team playoff that also includes Paoli, Clarksville, Crawford County, Eastern Pekin, Perry Central, Providence and Switzerland County.
Springs Valley and West Washington will compete in Class A Sectional 48.
Sectional alignments were also announced for basketball, volleyball and soccer.
In boys basketball, Class 4A Sectional 15 remained unchanged. But in girls, North Harrison (because of the success factor) was moved up into Sectional 15, making it a seven-team sectional for the next two years. In volleyball, Providence was bumped into the sectional with HHC foes (except for East and Madison) for the same reason and time frame.
Mitchell remained in 2A Sectional 47 for basketball in both genders.
Soccer is adding a third class, which means BNL will now compete in 3A Sectional 14 boys sectional with Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Martinsville, Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South. In girls soccer, BNL will be in Sectional 15 with the same HHC opponents that comprise the boys basketball sectional.
