(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Takuma Sato became the first Japanese driver to win the Indianapolis 500 as he was able to hold off three-time winner Helio Castroneves in the 101st running of IndyCar’s premier event.
It was a fantastic finish as Sato edged Castroneves by a mere 0.20011 of a second.
"Unbelievable feeling," the 40-year old said after the victory. "It was a fantastic race. What a race. I hope the fans enjoyed it."
After Sato and Castroneves was rookie Ed Jones, Max Chilton and Tony Kanaan.
A scary moment at the track as pole-sitter Scott Dixon went airborne in a wild crash and somehow escaped uninjured. Two-time Formula 1 Champion Fernando Alonso finished in 24th after an engine failure ended his day prematurely.
Rounding out the top 10 were Juan Pablo Montoya, Alexander Rossi, Marco Andretti, Gabby Chaves and Carlos Munoz.
