(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The first look at the 2017 Indianapolis Colts was one that left more to be desired as they fell to the Detroit Lions 24-10 in Sunday’s preseason opener.
With no Andrew Luck it was Scott Tolzien who got the starting reps under center. Tolzien played the first three series and finished 2 of 5 for 24 yards with the first team offense picking up only one first down.
"We didn't move the sticks," Tolzien said. "Our job is to move the chains and we didn't do that, my unit specifically. We need to get back to work and we have to get better."
The Colts scored only 3 points in the first 59 minutes and 59 seconds before Troymaine Pope scored on a 1-yard touchdown run as regulation expired.
The Colts finished with 230 total yards in the game, 11 penalties and gave up five sacks.
"We've got to be better in all aspects," Chuck Pagano said after the game. "It may be the first preseason game but we want to win every game we play."
After the game, owner Jim Irsay was asked about Andrew Luck and while he said the quarterback "could not be better" in his rehab process but stopped short of saying he would be under center in Week 1 against Los Angeles.
"I can't say unequivocally he'll be ready for the Ram game but I feel very confident that he'll be ready to start the season. That may not be the Ram game, but to start the season, yes."
