(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Indianapolis Colts made it official on Thursday as they placed quarterback Andrew Luck on season-ending injured reserve after suffering a setback in his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery.
General Manager Chris Ballard dispelled rumors that the injury was career-ending saying, "We haven't heard from one doctor that we spoke to that this was in any way a career-threatening injury. The biggest thing doctors have told us is to have patience with the rehab process."
Ballard also made a point to put to rest any thought that the team had misled fans or media about Luck's situation.
"We were all optimistic," he said referring to owner Jim Irsay's proclamation back in August that Luck would be "ready for the season". "Mr. Irsay, we are very fortunate, we have a great owner. Very supportive, very optimistic. We all were optimistic that this was going to work out sooner than later, but unfortunately the human body -everybody's human body is different and we are where we are."
Ballard said the team would go forward with the mindset that Luck will return to the team in 2018.
Andrew Luck released a statement through the team on the news saying, "I'm very optimistic about the future. I wish I was better and 100 percent this season, but that's not the case. I know I'll be better from this. I know I'll be a better quarterback, teammate, person and player from this, and I'm excited for the future."
Since 2015 Luck has missed a total of 26 games (including all 16 from this season) with 18 of those missed games being due to his right shoulder.
