(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Colts held a press conference on Wednesday, though not the one they originally planned for.
After the stunning news Tuesday evening that Josh McDaniels changed his mind and would remain in New England the Colts were sent back to square one in their head coaching search.
Colts GM Chris Ballard met with the media on Wednesday to discuss the events and where the team goes from here.
"With Josh backing out, we were disappointed, unquestionably: We were disappointed and surprised," he said. "We'd agreed to contract terms. We followed all the rules, did everything right."
Ballard said he was in draft meetings when he received the fateful call from McDaniels.
"I got a call Tuesday evening saying he changed his mind and was going in a different direction. At that point I informed our owner, we informed you all of where we were going, and we'll keep moving forward."
Ballard said when it came to why McDaniels changed his mind, it didn't matter.
"I said it's a yes or no answer. Are you in or out and when he said "Out" I didn't need to hear much else. I didn't want the explanation. Either you're in or you're out. That's his prerogative and that's his choice. He chose not to be an Indianapolis Colt."
Ballard added that Andrew Luck's health had no bearing on McDaniels' decision and that Luck would not require a second surgery. To end the press conference, Ballard added one last line before stepping away from the podium: "The rivalry is back on."
