(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart were elected to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame, marking the first time NASCAR drivers have been given the honor.
This year's ballot was the first to expand to include members of NASCAR and Formula 1 with Gordon and Stewart being chosen from 14 nominees. Both have ties to central Indiana with Gordon's family moving from California to Pittsboro, Indiana while Stewart is a native of Columbus, Indiana.
Gordon is a four-time NASCAR series champion and won 93 NASCAR races, including the Daytona 500 three times. He also is a five-time Brickyard 400 winner, including winning the inaugural race in 1994.
Stewart won three NASCAR championships, two Brickyard 400 races and is a former Verizon IndyCar Series champion.
"We're thrilled that the first class of inductees with our new name and election criteria honor two drivers who mean so much to fans of Central Indiana and around the world," IMS Foundation president Tony George said.
Gordon and Stewart will be officially inducted into the hall of fame on May 24, ahead of the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500.
