(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Colts GM Chris Ballard broke down all 11 of the team’s draft picks with the media on Tuesday.
Ballard said of first round pick Quenton Nelson that "is a freak athlete" and someone they always had at the very top of their draft board.
When asked if Nelson would have still been their pick if highly-touted defensive end Bradley Chubb was still available (he was taken one pick earlier to the Denver Broncos) Ballard said, "There would have been a discussion, but Nelson's ceiling is higher."
Ballard added that Nelson was "the easiest pick I've ever been a part of."
The Colts GM called second-round pick Darius Leonard "one of my favorite guys" and believes they got good value and talent at all of their draft picks.
Earlier in the day, Ballard told SiriusXM NFL Radio that running back Marlon Mack played his rookie season with a torn labrum and underwent offseason shoulder surgery to repair the tear. He said he fully expects Mack to be ready for training camp.
The Colts continued to turn over their roster as they waived seven players and added 10 undrafted free agents.
Notable departures were veteran running back Matt Jones and linebacker Darnell Sankey while South Carolina linebacker Skai Moore was one of the intriguing additions. Moore racked up 353 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 14 interceptions in his career and was the 15th player in Division I history to lead his team in tackles in four seasons. His 14 interceptions also tie a school record.
