Carter Asking Court To Hear Case

Last updated on Tuesday, May 16, 2006

(STATEHOUSE) - Attorney General Steve Carter is asking the Indiana Supreme Court to settle the question of whether same-sex couples can adopt.

Carter says only that it's "proper" for the state's highest court to resolve what he calls "confusion" from different lower-court rulings.

The couple's attorney Barbara Baird notes caseworkers concluded they were fit parents, but does agree it's time to settle the broader issue.

If the Supreme Court agrees to hear the case, it's not likely to be resolved for another year.
