(AUSTIN) - An Austin man was hit by a train and killed just after midnight on Wednesday.
The train, owned by Louisville-Indiana Rail Road, was traveling south on the tracks near Terrell Road in Scottsburg when the conductor saw what he thought was a patch of grass on the tracks. As the train got closer he says he noticed it was a person and applied the brakes, but they could not get the train stopped in time. The train struck and killed 30-year-old Timothy S. Kovener, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
At this time it is unknown why Kovener was lying on the rail road tracks when he was struck.
