(BLOOMINGTON) - Internet researchers at Indiana University say a theory that the rich get richer on the internet is untrue.
The theory is referred to as "googlearchy," and it says search engines direct people to already popular sites, thus limiting the effectiveness and traffic of newer, less-popular sites.
Informatics and computer science professor Filippo Menczer says a web mining study shows larger sites got far less traffic than predicted by the googlearchy model.
Menczer says his team wants to learn how web users are directed as they search for knowledge on the web.
