(UNDATED) - You need to take it more slowly when the roads are covered with ice and snow.
But State Police Senior Trooper Cedric Merritt says the time to adjust is now, even when it's just rain you need to allow extra room to stop. Merritt says to stow a flashlight, extra clothing, blankets and nonperishable food in your car in case you get stuck.
And Sgt. Ray Poole says to get up earlier if need be to warm up your car and scrape the windshield. One fatal crash last winter was blamed on a driver trying to drive with just a little peephole carved into the frost on the windows.
