(SOUTH BEND) - A South Bend police officer was shot in the head Sunday night.
Police say a bullet grazed the side of Corporal Kelly Waite's head as he was conducting a routine search through vacant homes for illegal activity.
Waite and another officer discovered a man in one of the homes. They say he opened fire on the officers. The officers returned fire and hit the gunman who then fled to a nearby home.
Waite and the suspect were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening wounds.
