(UNDATED) - Department of Natural Resources officials have made a major caviar raid on the Ohio River.
Sixteen people are in custody for allegedly poaching paddlefish eggs for the luxuriant dish. The alleged poachers face nearly 40 felony counts.
Sergeant Dean Shadley with the DNR says officers found the poachers fishing in the tributaries of the Ohio River near the small town of Vevay. More than 12 months of undercover work led to the arrests.
Shadley says fishing for caviar is not illegal, but the manner in which the fishing was allegedly carried out is. Shadley says those in custody were fishing too close to the dams along the river. Shadley also says caviar poaching is a lucrative business, one paddlefish can yield several hundred dollars in eggs.
