(UNDATED) - The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says the warmer weather is affecting the air quality in the state.
I-DEM spokesman Dan Murray says pollutants are reacting with sunlight in the presence of heat to create high levels of ozone. He says ozone in the upper atmosphere is good, and it protects us from ultraviolet radiation.
However, ozone at ground level can cause respiratory problems for sensitive groups, children and elderly. These "at-risk" groups are encouraged to reduce or avoid heavy work outdoors during the heat of the day. The hottest part of the day is between 10:00AM and 2:00PM.
