(INDIANAPOLIS) - The 2007 Indiana State Fair is now underway.
The popular hot air balloon race was held and Bloomington balloonist Travis Vencel won first place. New at the fair this year are an exhibit on Indiana curiosities and a demolition derby on the fair's final day, August 19th.
State officials say they don't expect any safety problems with rides on the State Fair Midway, although most won't be inspected until the fair is underway. State law requires carnival rides to be inspected once a year.
Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Pam Bright says that means new rides must be inspected before they can open, but returning attractions still have their sticker from last year's fair. Inspectors will visit periodically during the fair's 12-day run and issue a new safety certification.
