(GEIST) - A victory for Geist residents trying to avoid annexation by Fishers.
The Hamilton County Commission unanimously approved petitions to explore the idea of splitting the Geist area into two towns, East Geist and West Geist.
Members of the group Geist United Opposition presented commissioners with hundreds of signatures from homeowners. The Fishers Town Council has been trying to annex parts of Geist for months.
Hamilton County Commissioner Steve Holt says the next step is for the Fishers Planning Council to set a public hearing on the idea of splitting Geist up. The council has three months to do that.
While Fishers can still try to annex areas of Geist, it will be a moot effort if those areas become two separate towns.
The Hamilton County Commission has the final say, barring a legal injunction.
