(UNDATED) - INDOT says a snap inspection of nine steel-deck truss bridges finds no cause for concern, but the state is bringing in an outside consultant to double-check.
After last month's bridge collapse in Minnesota, INDOT ordered inspections of six state bridges and three county bridges with the same general design.
Bridge Inspection Program Manager Bill Dittrich says those checks confirmed repair needs on a couple of bridges already scheduled for repairs, but says there were no surprises. Even so, he says a follow-up inspection should start next week.
He says the state is being extra-cautious after the Minneapolis disaster. Dittrich says the second round of checks will include assessments of details like rivet heads which normally wouldn't be considered a critical part of the design.
